Chemnitz honours Siegmund Rotstein’s legacy in rebuilding its Jewish community
A public discussion will honour Siegmund Rotstein, a key figure in rebuilding Chemnitz’s Jewish community after the Second World War. Born in 1925, he would have celebrated his 100th birthday on November 30, 2025. The event will reflect on his life and contributions to the city.
Rotstein survived Nazi persecution and deportation as a young man. After returning to Chemnitz, he dedicated himself to reviving the local Jewish community. For four decades, he served as its chairman, shaping its growth and resilience.
The event marks Rotstein’s enduring impact on Chemnitz. His leadership helped restore a community nearly destroyed during the war. The city continues to recognise his legacy through public remembrance and discussion.
