Chemnitz Marks 25 Years of Peace Day with Reflection and Action
Chemnitz will host its 25th Peace Day on March 5, 2023, under the theme Remaining Steadfast for Peace. The event brings together residents, activists, and officials to reflect on the city's wartime destruction and today's challenges around conflict and democracy. Organisers promise a mix of commemorations, discussions, and interactive activities open to all.
The day begins with a wreath-laying ceremony, followed by an opening at the Peace Cross. At Neumarkt Square, visitors can explore an exhibition celebrating 25 years of volunteer peace work. Activities include Flutes for Peace, a Red Hand Day campaign against child soldiers, and discussions on Living in Peace, Everywhere.
Sabine Kühnrich, spokesperson for the working group, notes that the event unites those worried about current wars and debates on military readiness. Stephan Brenner, another member, thanks the city for its financial backing, including support from the cultural department and the Bertha von Suttner Foundation. The programme bridges history and present-day issues, from remembering World War II to fostering social cohesion. Similar *Friedenstage* have spread across Germany in recent years, with at least 20-30 cities—from Berlin and Munich to smaller towns like Tübingen—holding their own peace events since 2021. The day closes with an ecumenical service and a final ceremony at the Peace Cross.
Chemnitz Peace Day has grown into a long-standing tradition, blending remembrance with calls for democracy and coexistence. The 2023 edition continues this mission, offering a platform for reflection and action. Organisers hope the event will inspire wider discussions on peace in the region and beyond.
