Chemnitz taxi fares to rise in two stages by 2027 amid cost pressures
Taxi fares in Chemnitz are set to rise in two stages over the next two years. The city council has approved increases following a review by Taxigenossenschaft Chemnitz eG. The changes come as part of an updated Taxi Fare Ordinance due to take effect in May 2026. The first round of adjustments will begin on May 1, 2026. The base fare will climb to €4.50, while the surcharge for large-capacity taxis will go up to €7. On average, passengers can expect fares to increase by 15 to 16 percent at this stage.
Kilometre rates and waiting-time charges will also be revised. These changes reflect rising operational costs, particularly the sharp increase in the statutory minimum wage.
A second round of fare hikes is scheduled for January 1, 2027. The base fare will then rise further to €5.20, and the large-capacity surcharge will reach €7.50. This adjustment represents an additional 7 percent increase on top of the earlier changes.
From May 2026, all taxis must also accept cashless payments via credit or debit card when requested by customers. The revision was developed after consultations with various local institutions to ensure fairness and transparency. The fare increases will take effect in two phases, with the first adjustment in May 2026 and the second in January 2027. The changes aim to address rising costs while ensuring payment flexibility for passengers. All taxis will be required to offer card payment options from next year.
