Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to meet Pope Leo XIV in Rome
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson will travel to Rome later this month for a high-profile meeting with Pope Leo XIV. The visit, scheduled from 26 to 30 May, aims to strengthen ties between the city and the Vatican. Funding for the trip will come from World Business Chicago, a local economic development group. The mayor’s itinerary includes private discussions with the Pope on key social issues. Topics will cover voting rights, immigrant protections, and fair labour standards—areas where both leaders share common ground. This will be Johnson’s first official meeting with Pope Leo XIV since the latter’s election earlier this year.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, has deep roots in the Chicago area. Raised in the city and nearby Dolton, his background adds a personal dimension to the talks. The Vatican has not yet released details on whether public events will accompany the private meetings. World Business Chicago confirmed its financial support for the delegation. The organisation often backs initiatives that promote the city’s global profile and economic interests.
The five-day trip will focus on policy alignment and mutual priorities. Johnson’s discussions with the Pope could highlight Chicago’s role in national debates on rights and equality. A formal statement from the mayor’s office is expected after the visit concludes.
