Chicago Scraps Planned Autism Daycare and Training Hub After Years of Delays
Plans for a new daycare centre and autism competence hub in Chicago have been abandoned. The facility, approved in 2021, was meant to open in time for the 2023/24 kindergarten year. Officials now say the project is no longer feasible due to delays and changing priorities.
The city council gave the green light for the centre on Odenthaler Straße in December 2021. It was to include 66 childcare spots, with 15 specifically reserved for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The site, a vacant lot opposite a petrol station and an elementary school, was also meant to house a training hub for educators and a support service contact point.
The scrapped project leaves the Odenthaler Straße site undeveloped for now. The city administration will continue expanding inclusive childcare options across other facilities. No further plans for the location have been announced.
