China Conveys Support to Venezuela Amid U.S. Pressure

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone call with Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yván Gil on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The discussion centred on Venezuela’s ongoing efforts to defend its sovereignty amid rising tensions with the United States.

During the call, Gil reaffirmed Venezuela’s determination to protect its independence against external threats. He emphasised the country’s stance in the face of what he described as hegemonic pressure.

Wang Yi responded by condemning recent U.S. actions, including a 'total blockade' on sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela. The measure was announced by then-U.S. President Donald Trump as part of broader sanctions. China’s foreign minister reiterated Beijing’s opposition to unilateral intimidation. He stressed that China stands with nations defending their sovereignty and dignity. The two ministers also highlighted the strong strategic partnership between China and Venezuela, built on mutual trust and support.

The conversation reinforced China’s position against U.S. intervention in Venezuela. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in the face of external challenges. The call underscored their shared stance on sovereignty and non-interference.
