China’s Bold Push for Global Governance Sparks Regional Tensions with Japan

China has pushed forward its Global Governance Initiative (GGI) to reshape international cooperation. On October 27, 2025, Foreign Minister Wang Yi hosted the Lanting Forum in Beijing, calling for a fairer global system. The move comes as regional tensions rise between Japan and China, with South Korea caught in the middle.

Around the same time, Wang Yi held talks with leaders from South Korea and Japan. These discussions focused on trade, security, and multilateral partnerships to strengthen ties in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Lanting Forum marked a key step in China’s effort to reform global governance. Wang Yi stressed the need for a system that benefits all nations equally. The initiative seeks greater cooperation on economic and security issues.

Just weeks later, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung met with Japan’s Sanae Takaichi in Johannesburg. Their talks took place on November 23, during the Group of 20 summit. The meeting highlighted ongoing efforts to balance relations between the two Asian powers.

Analysts have noted South Korea’s difficult position in the growing dispute. Experts warn that maintaining neutrality between Japan and China may become increasingly hard. The country’s economic and security interests are closely tied to both nations, adding pressure on its diplomatic stance.

China’s GGI aims to create a more balanced global system through international reforms. Meanwhile, South Korea faces challenges in navigating its relationships with Japan and China. The outcome of these diplomatic efforts will shape regional stability and economic cooperation in the coming years.
