China's Envoy Defends Record Amid EU Debate on Global Role
On the anniversary of China's founding, a debate took place at the Ost Berlin Theater. Wolfram Adolphi, Claudia Wessling, and Zeng Fanhua, Envoy of the Chinese Embassy in Germany, discussed relations between the EU and China, and China's global role.
Wolfram Adolphi cautioned against divisive rhetoric, stressing mutual dependence and the need for joint solutions. Claudia Wessling, from MERICS, called for open dialogue on human rights issues in EU-China talks.
Zeng Fanhua, representing China, defended his country's record on national minorities and economic growth. He attributed China's success to its unique model of strong leadership, pragmatism, and diligent population. Zeng also denied accusations of labor camps in Xinjiang, referring to them as 'training centers'.
Looking ahead, Zeng hinted at increased Chinese engagement globally, focusing on Asia, Europe, and themes like governance reform and economic influence. This is part of China's push for a new global order, including efforts to reshape international governance systems and bolster its presence in strategic areas.
The debate highlighted differing views on China's role and policies. While China expressed confidence in its model and denied criticisms, EU representatives called for open dialogue and addressed dependencies in supply chains. As China's global influence grows, such discussions are expected to continue.
