China's Li Qiang Optimistic About China-Australia Relations Despite Tensions
Chinese Premier Li Qiang has expressed optimism about the current state of China-Australia relations, despite recent military incidents and diplomatic tensions. This comes after a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last week.
Last week, during a Southeast Asian summit in Malaysia, Li Qiang and Albanese met on the sidelines to discuss bilateral relations. Li Qiang stated that China is eager to build a more stable and strategic partnership with Australia.
Despite recent rivalry and military incidents, such as a Chinese fighter jet dropping flares near an Australian patrol plane, economic ties between the two countries remain stable. This is a testament to the resilience of the relationship, even amidst geopolitical tensions and disputes, including those in the South China Sea.
Premier Li Qiang's optimism signals a potential thaw in China-Australia relations, which have been strained in recent years. As China continues to increase its influence in the Asia-Pacific region, including with Pacific Island nations, maintaining stable ties with Australia is seen as crucial. The two countries' leaders have expressed a willingness to improve relations, with Albanese visiting China in July to this end.
