Chittagong University Sees High Voter Turnout Amid Election Irregularities Allegations
Wednesday saw the Chittagong University Central Students' Union and hall unions election, with a strong turnout of 70 per cent of the 27,516 eligible voters. The day was marked by tight security and allegations of irregularities.
Voting took place from 9:30am to 4:00pm, with results anticipated by midnight. The election commission and university administration defended the use of photo-based voter lists, stating that signatures and ink marks were not required. However, some candidates and agents raised concerns about erasable ink and the absence of voter signatures during election day balloting.
Tension escalated at the Arts Faculty post-election, as supporters of Bangladesh Jatiatabadi Chatra Dal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed. The Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya panel also lodged a complaint, alleging that indelible ink was not used and ballot papers were issued without signatures in several rooms.
Despite the allegations, about 70 per cent of students participated enthusiastically in the elections. The university administration and election commission are expected to address the concerns raised and ensure transparency in the election process.
