Christmas Market Must Go - Is the Boss Planning a New Location?
Zurich’s beloved Wienachtsdorf Christmas market has opened for the final time on Sechseläutenplatz. The event, a long-standing tradition, will close its doors after this year’s festivities. Visitors braved chilly temperatures and gusts of the icy Bise wind as they enjoyed the market one last time.
The city of Zurich has chosen a new concept to replace the Wienachtsdorf from 2026 onwards. Bellevue Noël, designed by Future Events GmbH, will take over the site, featuring an oversized Advent wreath and a five-metre-high walkable platform. The decision follows the expiration of the Wienachtsdorf’s operating permit at the end of this year.
Katja Weber, the organiser behind Schöne Bescherung AG, has run the market for a decade. She remains hopeful but uncertain about the future, despite a petition to save the Wienachtsdorf gaining support. Weber expressed gratitude for the public’s backing but admitted no concrete plans exist yet for a new location. The team behind the market will assess the situation in January. Until then, the Wienachtsdorf will continue in its usual central spot through 2025, as no alternative venue has been announced for 2023. The final days of this year’s market saw visitors wandering through stalls, soaking in the festive atmosphere under cold but clear skies.
The end of the Wienachtsdorf marks a shift in Zurich’s Christmas traditions. Bellevue Noël will introduce a fresh experience, while Weber and her team consider their next steps. For now, the market’s final chapter plays out under the watchful eyes of loyal visitors.
