Christmas Visit to JVA Neumünster - Christmas Visit to JVA Neumünster
Christmas is often a time for families to gather and celebrate together. But for inmates at Neumünster Prison, the holiday season brings a different experience. This year, Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Justice, Kerstin von der Decken, visited the facility on Christmas Eve to attend a special service with prisoners and staff alike.
The prison hosted a Christmas Eve service led by Bishop Nora Steen and prison chaplain Jörn Kress. The event gave inmates an opportunity for reflection and a sense of community during a challenging time. Von der Decken joined the service, acknowledging the difficulties prisoners face when separated from loved ones.
After the service, the minister expressed her gratitude to the prison staff. She highlighted their efforts to make the holiday as bearable as possible for those behind bars. Von der Decken also noted that Christmas, while a festival of love for many, can be especially hard for inmates who cannot share it with family. Neumünster Prison regularly offers church services during the festive season. These gatherings provide a moment of connection and solace for prisoners who might otherwise spend the day in isolation.
The visit by the justice minister underscored the importance of support for inmates during the holidays. While Christmas remains a time of separation for prisoners, events like the service at Neumünster aim to bring comfort. The prison continues to provide opportunities for reflection and community, even in difficult circumstances.
