Christmas Visit to JVA Neumünster - Christmas Visit to JVA Neumünster
Christmas is often seen as a time for family and love. But for prisoners, the holiday season brings isolation and hardship. Kerstin von der Decken, Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Justice, visited Neumünster Prison on Christmas Eve to witness how inmates experience the festive period under difficult circumstances.
The minister described the holidays as especially tough for those behind bars. While many gather with loved ones, inmates face separation and loneliness. Von der Decken thanked prison staff for their efforts in making the season more bearable.
On Christmas Eve, a special church service took place inside the prison. Bishop Nora Steen and prison chaplain Jörn Kress led the event, offering inmates a moment of reflection and community. The service provided a rare opportunity for shared experience in an otherwise isolating environment.
The visit highlighted the challenges prisoners face during the festive season. Church services and staff support aim to ease some of the emotional strain. Yet, for inmates, the holiday remains a time marked by absence and longing.
