Christmas Without Family

Berlin is offering a mix of festive and alternative celebrations this holiday season. While some residents seek traditional gatherings, others turn to unconventional events for community and connection. From free meals for those in need to punk concerts and anti-Christmas parties, the city has options for everyone.

On December 22, 2025, entertainer Frank Zander will host his annual Weihnachtsessen at the Estrel Hotel in Neukölln. Around 2,500 homeless and needy people will receive a goose dinner, gifts, and live entertainment. Stars like Nino de Angelo will perform, with support from well-known volunteers.

Meanwhile, Marzahn-Hellersdorf is holding free community events for seniors and those without family. These gatherings take place on December 1, 3, 4, 11, and 16 at venues such as the Stadtteilzentrum Hellersdorf Ost and the Tschechow-Theater. Registration is required by phone.

For those avoiding traditional celebrations, alternative events are available. The Anti-Xmas Bar at La Casa squat in Hellersdorf, a communal kitchen at Zielona Góra, and a regular pub night at Tristeza in Neukölln provide spaces for connection. Café Köpenick is hosting a two-day 'Forget Christmas' punk concert on December 26 and 27. On Christmas Day, Rigaer Straße 78 will feature a Holiday Misery Concert with social distancing.

Leftist spaces are also offering alternatives. The Antifamilia Shitmas Gala at Schreina47 squat raises funds for victims of far-right violence. Some attendees avoid family gatherings due to fear, loneliness, or conflict.

Berlin’s holiday season includes both charitable and unconventional events. Free meals, punk shows, and anti-Christmas parties cater to different needs. The city ensures that residents—whether seeking warmth or rebellion—have a place to go.
