Chrystia Freeland to lead Oxford’s Rhodes Trust after political career
Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s former finance minister and deputy prime minister, will take on a new role at the University of Oxford next summer. She has been named CEO of the Rhodes Trust and Warden of Rhodes House, starting on July 1, 2026. The move follows a long political career, including key positions in the federal cabinet.
Freeland first entered Parliament in 2013 and has since been re-elected four times. She served as internal trade minister and transport minister under former Prime Minister Mark Carney before stepping down from cabinet in September. Her resignation came as she took on a role representing the Carney government in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.
Freeland’s appointment marks a shift from politics to academia and global leadership. She will oversee one of the world’s most recognised scholarship programmes while maintaining her parliamentary seat. Her tenure at Oxford begins in mid-2026.
