Church of England's Bishops Move Forward in LLF Process, Reaffirm PLF
The Church of England's House of Bishops has made significant moves in the Living in Love and Faith (LLF) process, which explores relationships, sexuality, and marriage. Key decisions include the re-establishment of a Pastoral Consultative Group and the continued commendation of the Prayers of Love and Faith (PLF).
The bishops have decided not to propose a code of practice at this stage. Instead, they will reflect on legal and theological advice to determine the formal legislative process needed for clergy in same-sex civil marriages. This process will consider the possibility of special worship services using the PLF.
Diocesan decisions on resources, placement, and appointments will remain unaffected by views on LLF matters. The PLF continues to be commended for use in regularly scheduled services under Canon B5. However, bespoke services using the PLF require maximum communal authorization through the Canon B2 process. The pastoral guidance for the PLF will be updated to reflect these changes.
The House of Bishops has provided pastoral reassurance that no one is obliged to use the PLF against their conscience. Until further decisions, the current guidelines for clergy in same-sex civil marriages remain in place. The bishops' actions aim to balance respect for diverse views and the need for clear guidance within the Church of England.
