Church steps in to erase £27,500 in student lunch debt by 2022
A recent Elizabethtown Area school board meeting covered several pressing issues, from student lunch debt to facility concerns. Parents and staff also raised questions about coaching resignations and board conduct. Meanwhile, a local church has launched a campaign to clear thousands in unpaid meal balances.
The Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren announced plans to erase roughly £27,500 in school lunch debt. Their fundraising drive, running from December 2021 until the end of the school year, will officially begin at the 26 November Thanksgiving Eve service. Currently, 328 students owe amounts ranging from 10p to over £720 each. The school board supported the effort by unanimously approving temporary waivers for donation policy requirements.
The church’s fundraising campaign will now move forward with the board’s approval, aiming to clear all outstanding lunch debt by summer 2022. The board must also address concerns over coaching resignations, student conduct, and facility maintenance in the coming months. Air quality monitoring will continue, while a formal health inspection may follow if the union’s request is granted.
