Hundreds of Chutia community members took to the streets of Golaghat on Saturday, protesting the denial of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for their community. The demonstration was organized by the Chutia Jati Unnati Sabha, with members of All Chutia Jati Sanmilan joining in their demand for tribal status.
The rally, which saw a significant number of Chutia community members carrying banners and placards, made its way through the town. The protesters, led by All Chutia Jati Sanmilan chief adviser Amio Kumar Bora, demanded that the government recognize the Chutia people as a Scheduled Tribe and grant them the constitutional safeguards that come with this status.
Bora, speaking to the gathered crowd, emphasized the community's long-standing demand for ST status. He highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the Chutia people and their right to the same protections and benefits afforded to other recognized Scheduled Tribes.
The protest in Golaghat marks a renewed push by the Chutia community for Scheduled Tribe status. With the support of organizations like the Chutia Jati Unnati Sabha and All Chutia Jati Sanmilan, the community hopes that their demands will be recognized and acted upon by the authorities.
