City of Isabela Honours Four Artists for Preserving Traditional Arts
The City Government of Isabela has celebrated four local artists, honouring them for their significant contributions to preserving and advancing traditional arts and crafts. The Habi Awards, a programme of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), recognised these individuals for their dedication and skill.
Tumahid Saimani, a net maker, was honoured for his role in supporting the livelihood of local fishermen. His intricate and durable nets have been crucial to the community's fishing industry. Meanwhile, Araja Abdulkalim, a mat weaver, was recognised for her unique and meaningful mat designs, which have gained regional acclaim.
Datu Halun Asakil, a master blacksmith, was honoured for his commitment to preserving the ancient blade-making tradition. His craftsmanship ensures that this historic skill remains alive in the community. Additionally, Viniya Padjaran, a traditional Bajau chanter, was recognised for her dedication to performing community chants, keeping this cultural practice vibrant.
Each awardee received a cash prize of P20,000, a Plaque of Recognition, and a Gold-plated Medallion. They also gained privileges such as regular medical check-ups, showcasing of their arts and crafts, and invitations to special events. The City Government of Isabela and the NCCA hope that these honours will inspire more artists to preserve and advance traditional arts and crafts.
