City of Mühlheim Expands Youth Promotion with Streetwork Offer

Mülheim am Main has brought its streetwork programme under city control, creating a permanent role for youth outreach. The service, previously run by the nonprofit Zugpferd e.V., now operates as a municipal initiative. Mayor Dr. Alexander Krey described the move as a vital step for supporting young people in the area.

The city officially took over the programme on 15 October 2021, with Mona Huber initially leading the effort. By 2024, Irini Chilas had become the dedicated streetwork coordinator, ensuring continuity in the role. The service focuses on young people who rarely engage with traditional youth clubs or support systems.

Streetworkers mediate conflicts between youths and residents, businesses, or local institutions. All interactions remain voluntary and anonymous, encouraging trust. The team also helps young people connect with support services and develop collaborative projects. Mayor Krey acknowledged Zugpferd e.V.’s contributions over the years. He expressed confidence that the new municipal structure would bring renewed energy to the programme. The goal is to give young voices a stronger presence in local decision-making.

The expanded streetwork service now operates as a fixed part of Mülheim’s youth support network. It will continue to reach marginalised young people and address their needs directly. The city plans to maintain and develop the initiative as a long-term resource.
