City Slashes Budget Deficit by €29M While Protecting Culture and Conservation
The city administration has carefully reviewed its expenditure for the upcoming year, aligning each cost with actual needs. Despite challenging financial times, support for clubs, aid organizations, and conservation groups remains a priority.
The 2025 budget draft initially showed a shortfall of €85.36 million. However, through cost-cutting measures and efficiency improvements, the administration has reduced this by €29.24 million. Each expenditure was individually assessed, with no across-the-board reductions in discretionary spending.
Funds allocated to nature conservation associations and clubs listed under account 7128900 were adjusted based on actual usage. Some subsidies are tied to contracts, such as the contribution to the Opel Villas Foundation and the Bel R! Festival. Cultural associations in Calau received around €30,000 distributed among 40 nonprofit groups. Programs like 'Auszeit' and 'Wildwasser' have not faced reductions compared to the 2024 results.
In the 2025 federal budget draft, natural and cultural programs receiving funding include Bundeskulturfonds, although these face massive cuts up to 50%. Regional initiatives like 'Streuobst für alle' continue with smaller scale local funding.
The city administration has worked diligently to balance the 2025 budget, reducing the shortfall by €29.24 million through careful assessment and cost-cutting measures. Despite budget cuts at the federal level, local support for cultural and conservation programs continues, demonstrating the administration's commitment to these areas even in challenging financial times.
