City's bold infrastructure overhaul sparks debate over transport cuts and green spaces

Major changes are coming to local infrastructure and transport in the coming years. City planners have finalised redesigns for key areas, while budget talks reveal new priorities for road projects. Meanwhile, public transport faces significant disruptions, sparking debate among officials and residents alike.

The redesign of Laurentiusstraße will soon see three large trees planted in front of city hall. A review confirmed no other suitable locations existed, so the current plan will move forward. Elsewhere, the pedestrian zone in Buchmühle is set for repairs, with light-coloured asphalt proposed to improve both sustainability and appearance.

The CDU is pushing for more construction supervisors in budget talks, aiming to speed up road projects. However, opposition remains strong against relocating the Markt bus stop, which serves as a vital link to the pedestrian zone, market square, and city hall.

Public transport cuts proposed by the district administration have faced sharp criticism. Key routes like KVB Line 1 and the SB 40 express bus could be affected, raising concerns about connectivity. On top of this, the S11 line will undergo a lengthy closure from late 2030 to early 2032. This 18-month shutdown is necessary for building a second track, though no further details on 2026 closures are currently available.

The city's infrastructure plans are advancing, but not without controversy. New green spaces and pedestrian improvements will reshape public areas, while transport changes—both cuts and long-term closures—will impact daily travel. Officials will need to balance efficiency with public needs as these projects unfold.
