Cologne Launches Free Night Taxi Vouchers for Women’s Safety in 2025
Cologne is set to introduce a women's night taxi voucher scheme from next year, aiming to boost safety for women and diverse individuals during late-night travels. The project, a first for the city, will offer vouchers worth nine euros each for night taxi rides.
The initiative, named 'Frauen-Nacht-Taxi-Pilotprojekt', will provide women and individuals who identify as diverse, aged 16 and above, with up to five vouchers each. These can be redeemed for taxi rides between 22:00 and 06:00, with each voucher worth ten euros. The vouchers will be deducted directly from the fare, with a maximum of one voucher per ride.
The scheme has been highly sought after, with almost all of the initial 1,500 vouchers distributed within the first few days. Vouchers can be collected at customer centers across the city, with Porz and Rodenkirchen still holding a few. Cologne joins other cities like Munich, Mannheim, Gießen, Stuttgart, and Heidelberg in offering similar safety measures for women and diverse individuals at night.
The Cologne pilot project, if successful, could become a permanent fixture in the city's safety strategy, potentially serving as a model for other cities. Similar schemes have been in place in Munich since 2020, while Gießen plans to introduce a comparable system from June 2025. The city's successful launch of this project underscores its commitment to ensuring safe and affordable night travel for all.
