Cologne offers house near cathedral as Yad Vashem outpost - Cologne offers house near cathedral as Yad Vashem outpost
Cologne has put forward a site next to its iconic cathedral for a new Yad Vashem education and encounter centre. Mayor Torsten Burmester recently showed the location to an Israeli delegation. The project aims to combat antisemitism and promote Jewish life in the city.
The proposed site is the former study centre of the Romano-Germanic Museum, right beside Cologne Cathedral. The city has also suggested two alternative locations: the NS-Dokumentationszentrum and the Philharmonie. Burmester described the initiative as deeply personal and stressed its importance in fighting hatred.
Other German regions are competing for the centre as well. Bavaria and Saxony remain in the running, along with Düsseldorf and Dortmund within North Rhine-Westphalia. Yad Vashem will make its final choice in the first half of 2026.
If selected, the centre would stand near one of Cologne’s most famous landmarks. The decision will shape how Germany addresses antisemitism through education. A verdict is expected within the next two years.
