Cologne's S11 rail line gets €836M expansion with 10-minute trains by 2032

The S11 rail line between Cologne and Bergisch Gladbach is set for a major expansion. Planning approval has now been granted, allowing construction to move forward with a budget of €836 million. Once complete, trains will run every 10 minutes, with even more frequent services during peak times. The project includes a double-track extension between Cologne-Dellbrück and Bergisch Gladbach. Bergisch Gladbach station will grow to four platforms, and a new station, Cologne-Kalk West, will be built. All stops from Cologne-Holweide to Bergisch Gladbach will also receive full accessibility upgrades.

Five new platforms are planned across two key stations. Cologne Central Station will gain two additional platforms, while Cologne Messe/Deutz will add three. These changes aim to improve capacity and reduce congestion on the busy route. Funding for the €836 million project comes from both federal and state sources. The German government is contributing €531 million, with North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) providing €305 million. Transport Minister Oliver Krischer expects all construction permits to be finalised this summer, allowing DB InfraGO to begin tendering contracts and scheduling track closures. Work could start as early as late 2030, according to Bergisch Gladbach's First Deputy Mayor, Ragnar Migenda. However, the original completion target of early 2032 for the second track may now face delays due to potential clashes with other infrastructure projects.

The S11 expansion will significantly boost rail capacity between Cologne and Bergisch Gladbach. Once operational, the line will offer trains every 10 minutes, increasing to nearly every five minutes at peak times. The project also ensures all stations along the route meet modern accessibility standards.
