In the heart of California, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is currently investigating a sixth confirmed case of measles this year. The case, under investigation, may have traveled through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) while infectious.

This latest case does not appear to be connected to the resident who traveled from Texas, unlike the previous case reported in March 2025. The last case of measles in a Los Angeles County resident was reported a year ago.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling (encephalitis), permanent hearing loss, cognitive issues, or even death. Symptoms of measles usually include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic rash.

The 2025 measles outbreaks in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma have resulted in over 1,300 confirmed cases nationwide, with Texas experiencing the largest share—around 796 confirmed cases—and New Mexico 96 cases. Most infections have occurred in individuals who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown.

Public health responses to these outbreaks include increased surveillance and reporting, hospitalization of severe cases, and widespread vaccination campaigns focused on the MMR vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued warnings for travelers, especially recommending vaccination before international travel and advising postponement of trips if vaccination cannot be obtained.

In Los Angeles County, Public Health is urging residents, especially those who travel internationally, to get their measles immunization. Most health insurances cover the cost of the MMR and MMRV vaccine.

As the investigation continues, Public Health is identifying others who may have been potentially exposed at LAX. The department is collaborating with the California Department of Public Health and other relevant health services to ensure a thorough investigation.

It's essential for individuals who have not had measles in the past and have not received the measles vaccine to be aware of the risk. Those who have been exposed are at risk of developing measles from 7 to 21 days after exposure.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses. Stay informed, stay safe, and consider getting vaccinated to protect yourself and others from measles.
