Congress-RJD Power Struggle Threatens Bihar Alliance
Tensions have risen between the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar, with a power struggle between party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav threatening to derail their alliance. The Congress's attempts to project Gandhi as the bigger leader have offended Yadav's supporters, while the delay in announcing Yadav as the Chief Minister nominee has further strained relations.
The root of the conflict lies in the rivalry between the two dynastic leaders and their differing ambitions. Gandhi, who has been struggling to revive the Congress's fortunes in Bihar, is reluctant to lead second fiddle to Yadav. Meanwhile, Yadav, seeking to expand beyond his traditional Muslim-Yadav vote base, sees himself as the natural leader of the alliance.
The seat-sharing dispute is another flashpoint. The RJD refused to allocate more than 61 seats to the Congress, leading to a breakdown in negotiations. The Congress feels it has been reduced to an also-ran in Bihar due to its lack of significant electoral dividends from its strategies, further fueling tensions.
The tug-of-war between the Congress and RJD is a result of their asymmetric alliance and the ambitions of their leaders. The Congress needs to reassess its coalition strategy and address the RJD's grievances, particularly regarding seat sharing and the Congress's Bihar in-charge. Meanwhile, Gandhi must acknowledge Yadav's leadership qualities if they are to present a united front in the upcoming elections.
