Leipzig/Halle Airport is set to welcome a significant expansion with the construction of a new maintenance hangar, funded by Ukrainian aviation company Antonov. Six Antonov aircraft are currently stationed at the airport, following the relocation of the entire Ukrainian fleet due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Antonov Logistics Salis GmbH (ALS), a subsidiary of the Ukrainian state-owned company Antonov based in Schkeuditz, is responsible for the construction of the new hangar. The agreement covers an area of 24,000 square meters in the northern part of Leipzig/Halle Airport.

The new maintenance hangar will cater specifically to the Antonov 124 cargo aircraft, a large cargo plane operated by Antonov Airlines. Although the exact investment amount for the project and the precise services planned for the hangar have not been disclosed, such facilities typically involve significant investment tailored to servicing these heavy cargo planes. They usually provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, including major structural checks, engine overhauls, avionics upgrades, and cargo system servicing.

Uwe Schuhart, the spokesman for Leipzig/Halle Airport, confirmed the Ukrainian presence and fleet relocation at the airport. He, however, could not provide the amount of the investment for the new maintenance hangar. It is known, however, that the new hangar will be fully funded by Antonov.

The Ukrainian aviation company Antonov has had a presence at Leipzig/Halle Airport with a maintenance base since 2006. Construction of the new maintenance hangar began and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. The Antonov 124 type giant cargo aircraft will be able to be parked in the new maintenance hangar upon its completion.

The relocation of the Ukrainian fleet to Leipzig/Halle Airport marks a significant development for the airport, further solidifying its position as a hub for cargo operations. As the construction progresses, the airport looks forward to strengthening its partnership with Antonov and supporting their operations.

  1. The Antonov Logistics Salis GmbH (ALS), a subsidiary of the Ukrainian state-owned aerospace company Antonov, will construct a new 24,000 square meter maintenance hangar at Leipzig/Halle Airport for their Antonov 124 cargo aircraft, a move that signifies a major expansion in the industrial and finance sector.
  2. As the new hangar is specifically designed to cater to the Antonov 124 cargo planes, businesses in the technology sector may also benefit from the creation of MRO services, potentially driving economic growth in the aerospace industry.
  3. The construction of this hangar represents a strategic business move by Antonov, further cementing their relationship with Leipzig/Halle Airport and securing their position as a key player in the global cargo operations and maintenance market.
