The global automotive industry is navigating a challenging environment due to ongoing trade tensions and the evolving US-EU trade framework. Recently, the US and Japan agreed to a 15% tariff on car imports, while the US-EU trade agreement also set a 15% tariff, easing earlier threats of tariffs up to 50%.
These tariff adjustments, alongside business climate uncertainties, are causing concern for German automotive companies. According to a July survey, the business climate index for the automotive industry increased from -31.6 points in June to -23.8 points in July, but the potential impact of the US-EU trade agreement on this index is yet to be reflected.
In terms of current situation, German automotive companies assessed their position more positively in July, with the indicator rising to -28.1 points from -35.8 points in June. However, the potential impact of the US-EU trade agreement on their business expectations for the future, international business position, and export expectations remains unclear from the July survey.
Anita Woelfl, an industry expert at ifo, stated that it's unclear whether the improvement is the start of a recovery or just a brief respite. She also expressed that the 15% tariffs are still painful for German automakers and suppliers.
The US market is significant for German automakers and suppliers, and the trade agreement ended months of uncertainty. Interestingly, companies viewed their international business more favorably in July compared to June, with over 30% reporting an improved position in the EU.
Export expectations for German automotive companies also improved in July, with export expectations for passenger vehicles and low-emission vehicles reliant on the US market potentially facing significant losses estimated between €1.5 and €7.5 billion.
In the face of these challenges, automotive logistics providers are facing investment freezes or must shift towards agility and digitalization to withstand uncertainty. Some companies have already lowered production forecasts citing tariff and supply chain pressures.
The outlook remains cautious with a focus on adapting supply chains and production localization amid a still fragmented trade landscape. The industry is bracing for a potentially challenging period, with the potential impact of the US-EU trade agreement on the business climate index for the automotive industry yet to be fully understood.
