Copper thefts plunge Manatee County into darkness and debt

Copper wire thefts are surging in Manatee County, leaving streets in the dark and costing taxpayers dearly. The crime wave mirrors a national trend, with thieves targeting valuable metal from streetlights and other infrastructure. Authorities are now urging residents to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious.

The price of copper wire has doubled in recent years, turning it into a prime target for criminals. In Manatee County, thieves have focused on street lighting systems, causing entire roads to lose power. The county has already spent over £200,000 repairing the damage—far more than the stolen wire's scrap value.

Thieves often strike at night, sometimes posing as contractors to avoid detection. To combat the issue, the county has teamed up with the sheriff's office to track and investigate thefts. Surveillance cameras have been installed in high-risk areas, and officials are asking the public to report any unusual activity near streetlights.

The problem isn't just local. Across the US, copper thefts have skyrocketed due to high metal prices. California saw a 300% increase between 2021 and 2024, while Texas recorded over 5,000 incidents in 2024 alone. Florida also faced a 150% jump in thefts from 2023 to 2025, with criminals targeting telecom and power lines. Stealing copper wire is a felony in Manatee County, but the financial and safety risks remain a growing concern.

Manatee County continues to battle copper wire thefts through surveillance, public awareness, and law enforcement cooperation. Residents are advised to call authorities if they spot suspicious behaviour near streetlights, especially after dark. The county's efforts aim to reduce blackouts and protect infrastructure from further damage.
