Coquitlam's Hazel Trembath Elementary School to Rise Again with $39M Provincial Funding
Coquitlam's Hazel Trembath Elementary School, destroyed in a suspicious fire on Oct. 14, 2023, is finally set for reconstruction. The provincial government has allocated nearly $39 million for the new school, accommodating 240 students. Construction begins in July 2026, with occupancy planned for December 2027.
The rebuilding process has seen community pressure play a significant role. Coquitlam Mayor Brad West, who wrote five letters to the province, including one dated Oct. 8, 2025, attributes the acceleration to residents' concerns. Mayor West hopes for further streamlining of lengthy processes in the future.
Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth, also the MLA for Port Coquitlam, acknowledges the urgency of the situation. The Ministry of Infrastructure will rebuild the school at its original site.
The new Hazel Trembath Elementary School is expected to be ready for students by December 2027. The provincial government's commitment to rebuilding the school at its original site, along with the community's persistent pressure, has brought the project to this stage.
