Crown Prince Haakon Marks 200 Years of Norwegian-American Relations

This year marks a significant milestone in Norwegian-American relations, with the 200th anniversary of organized emigration from Norway to the United States. Crown Prince Haakon has been visiting key states to commemorate this occasion, leaving a trail of cultural exchanges and strengthened ties.

In Minnesota, Governor Tim Walz, who previously ran as Kamala Harris' vice-presidential candidate in 2024, welcomed the Crown Prince. Walz, first elected in 2018 and serving since 2019, has maintained strong ties with Norway throughout his tenure. The Minnesota National Guard has collaborated with the Norwegian Home Guard for over five decades, further cementing this bond.

During his visit, Crown Prince Haakon was awarded an honorary doctorate from Luther College, an institution founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1861. The college continues to honor its Norwegian heritage by offering courses in Norwegian language, history, and culture. St. Olaf College in Minnesota also maintains close ties to Norway and is home to the Norwegian-American Historical Association. The Norway House in Minneapolis serves as a cultural and economic hub for Norwegian business activities in the U.S., housing approximately 230 Norwegian-controlled companies with nearly 20,000 employees and a turnover of around NOK 280 billion.

In Iowa, the Vesterheim Museum in Decorah holds the largest collection of any immigrant group in the U.S., showcasing the deep-rooted Norwegian heritage in the region.

The 200th anniversary of Norwegian emigration to the U.S. has been marked by a series of cultural exchanges and celebrations, culminating in Crown Prince Haakon's visit. These events have not only commemorated the past but also strengthened the present and future ties between Norway and the United States.
