A 20-year-old man died in Dortmund after being hit by a train while crossing a level crossing. The accident happened when he attempted to ride his bike past closed barriers. Emergency services and police were called to the scene immediately.

The incident took place at a railway crossing where the barriers were down. Despite the warning signals, the man tried to cross on his bike. The train driver applied the emergency brake, but the collision could not be prevented.

The railway line was temporarily shut down to allow police to investigate. Authorities are examining how the accident occurred and whether any safety measures failed.

Official statistics show that around 12 similar accidents involving bikes at level crossings have been recorded in Germany between 2023 and 2025. Most of these incidents happened in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.

The investigation into the Dortmund accident is ongoing. The railway line has since reopened, but the case highlights risks at level crossings. Authorities continue to urge caution when approaching closed barriers.
