Dame Caroline Wilson named UK's next ambassador to the EU for 2026
The UK has named Dame Caroline Wilson as its next ambassador to the European Union. She will take over from Lindsay Croisdale-Appleby in Brussels starting August 2026. Wilson brings decades of experience in European affairs, including a key role during Brexit negotiations.
Wilson currently serves as the UK's ambassador to China, a post she has held since 2020. Before that, she worked as the Foreign Office's Europe director from 2016 to 2019, playing a significant part in Brexit discussions. Her earlier career included a stint in Brussels from 2000 to 2004 at the UK Representation to the EU, where she also studied at the Université libre de Bruxelles.
She speaks four languages fluently: Mandarin, Russian, French, and German. This linguistic expertise will support her engagement with EU institutions through the UK's Permanent Representation in Brussels. The outgoing ambassador, Lindsay Croisdale-Appleby, was deeply involved in Brexit as deputy to chief negotiator David Frost in 2020. He previously held a senior Foreign Office role from 2017 to 2020, overseeing EU and other international matters.
Wilson's appointment comes as she prepares to leave her current role in China. Her background in European policy and multilingual skills will shape her work in Brussels. The transition is set for August 2026, when she formally replaces Croisdale-Appleby.
