In the annals of Lithuanian history, the name Steponas Darius stands out as a symbol of courage, determination, and a pioneering spirit. Born on January 9, 1896, in Rubiske, Kovno Governorate (now Lithuania), Darius embarked on a journey that would make him a national hero and an influential figure in the realm of aviation.

Darius immigrated to the United States with his family in 1907, at the age of 11. After joining the U.S. Army in 1917 following the declaration of war against Germany in World War I, he served initially as a telephone operator. However, his service extended beyond this role as he fought against the Central Powers in France.

Upon returning to the United States in 1927 after completing his pilot training in Lithuania, Darius' life took a new direction. In partnership with Carl G. Jordan, he established the South Bend Airways in Indiana, contributing significantly to the development of civil aviation in the United States. The fleet of the South Bend Airways consisted of two aircraft: a Pheasant H-10 and an Eaglerock Long Wing.

Darius' dedication to his native country did not wane. After returning to Lithuania in 1920, he graduated from the War School of Kaunas in 1921 and joined the Lithuanian Army. He participated in the Klaipėda Revolt against the French Administration in 1923 while serving in the Lithuanian Army.

One of Darius' most notable achievements came in 1933, when he and fellow Lithuanian-American aviator Stasys Girėnas undertook a historic transatlantic flight, aiming for a non-stop journey from New York City to Kaunas, Lithuania. On July 15, 1933, they embarked on this daring venture, flying the airplane named "Lituanica". Unfortunately, they met a tragic end during the flight, near their destination, crashing 650 kilometers away. This flight remains a defining moment in Lithuanian aviation history, and Darius and Girėnas are celebrated national heroes.

Darius' legacy continues to be remembered for his dedication to the betterment of the world and his various achievements. His contributions extend beyond aviation, as he also contributed to the development of various sports in Lithuania, being the first person to publish booklets about basketball and baseball in the country. In Kaunas, he even started the construction of the first stadium, which was later named after him.

Despite his devotion, Darius met a tragic end in a plane crash during his attempt to return to Lithuania. His life, however, continues to inspire generations, as the Darius and Girėnas Stadium in Kaunas stands as a testament to their courage and the impact they had on Lithuanian history.
