Darmstadt, Griesheim Reach Deal to Redevelop August-Euler Airfield
A significant redevelopment agreement has been reached for the former August-Euler Airfield near the Darmstadt interchange. The project, a joint effort between Darmstadt and Griesheim, aims to transform the site into a mixed-use area. Before it can commence, the plan requires approval from the Regional Council of Darmstadt by January 1, 2026.
The agreement, hailed as a 'major milestone' by Darmstadt's Mayor Hanno Benz (SPD), outlines a clear division of responsibilities. Darmstadt will oversee infrastructure and drainage, while Griesheim will manage municipal community initiatives. Both mayors, Benz and Griesheim's Mayor Geza Krebs-Wetzl (CDU), emphasized the partnership's significance for their cities' development.
Additionally, the city of Egelsbach has been brought into the fold. If the coordination agreement gains approval from the Darmstadt Regional Council, Egelsbach will implement the infrastructure and drainage measures at the former airfield.
The redevelopment of the former August-Euler Airfield is set to begin on January 1, 2026, pending approval from the Regional Council of Darmstadt. The project, a collaborative effort between Darmstadt, Griesheim, and Egelsbach, promises a mixed-use site that could bring significant benefits to the region.
