Darmstadt prepares for pivotal local elections with new voting systems
Darmstadt will hold its local elections on March 15 to choose a new city council. Alongside the main vote, residents will also elect members of the Foreigners' Advisory Council and, in Wixhausen, the District Council. The election introduces several voting options, including cumulative and panachage systems.
The Stadtverordnetenversammlung, Darmstadt's city assembly, consists of 71 representatives. Voters can cast up to 71 votes—either for individual candidates or entire party lists. The d'Hondt method will then allocate seats proportionally based on vote shares.
Panachage allows voters to mix their choices across different candidates or lists. Cumulative voting also lets them give multiple votes to a single candidate. However, a ballot becomes invalid if more than 71 votes are marked or if multiple list votes are selected. In addition to the city council, the **Foreigners' Advisory Council**—made up of 21 members—will be elected every five years. Meanwhile, residents in **Wixhausen** will separately choose the nine members of their **District Council**.
The election results will shape Darmstadt's local government for the next five years. The new city council, Foreigners' Advisory Council, and Wixhausen District Council will take office based on the votes cast. Official seat distribution from the previous election remains unavailable as of March 13, 2026.
