Darryl Strawberry receives presidential pardon for 1995 tax evasion conviction
Former MLB star Darryl Strawberry, a three-time World Series champion and eight-time All-Star, has been granted clemency by President Donald Trump. Strawberry, who previously served time in prison for violating probation on drug and solicitation charges in 2002, was pardoned for a 1995 tax evasion charge.
Strawberry, who played for several teams including the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 1995. This avoided a trial that could have resulted in a 15-year prison sentence. Trump's pardon makes Strawberry the second alumnus of Trump's former reality show, 'The Celebrity Apprentice,' to receive a presidential pardon.
Trump has been more aggressive in using his clemency powers in his second term. He has pardoned over 1,000 people, including those charged in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.
Darryl Strawberry's pardon comes as a significant development in his life after a successful baseball career and a period of legal troubles. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on his future endeavours.
