Deadly Berlin apartment fire kills one in suspected negligent arson
A deadly fire broke out in a Berlin apartment block early this morning. Emergency services rushed to Buggenhagenstraße in the Fennpfuhl neighbourhood after residents reported smoke. One person died in the blaze, which started in a fourth-floor kitchen.
Residents first noticed the smell of smoke just before 9:45 a.m. They quickly called the fire department, who arrived to find flames in a flat on the top floor. Firefighters evacuated everyone from the building while tackling the blaze.
Inside the apartment, crews discovered a 44-year-old man unconscious. Despite their efforts, he was later pronounced dead. His name has not been released to the public. The fire caused Buggenhagenstraße to close between Erich-Kuttner-Straße and Karl-Lade-Straße until around 1 p.m. No other injuries were reported during the incident. Berlin’s State Criminal Police Office has now taken over the investigation. Authorities are treating the case as suspected negligent arson.
The fire left one resident dead and forced the temporary closure of a section of Buggenhagenstraße. Investigators continue to examine the cause of the blaze. Further details on the case are expected as the inquiry progresses.
