Deadly Berlin crash leaves one dead after BMW allegedly runs red light
A serious traffic collision in Berlin's Rudow district on Thursday evening left one woman dead and four others injured. The crash involved a BMW and an Opel at the intersection of Stubenrauchstraße and Kanalstraße. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of trapped passengers and severe damage to both vehicles. At around 7:45 p.m., a 40-year-old man driving a BMW allegedly ran a red light and struck an Opel. The impact forced both cars off the road, leaving them heavily damaged. The Opel's driver, an 85-year-old man, along with his two female passengers—aged 76 and 85—were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
An 87-year-old woman in the Opel became trapped in the wreckage. Rescue teams freed her before airlifting her to a trauma centre with pelvic and leg injuries. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries. The BMW driver, who complained of shoulder pain, received outpatient treatment. His 42-year-old passenger walked away unharmed. Both vehicles were declared total losses and towed away by authorities. The accident caused major disruptions in the area. Police closed the intersection until around 3:30 a.m., affecting BVG bus routes M11 and 172. The traffic accident investigation unit of Police Directorate 1 (North) is now handling the case.
The collision resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances, including the alleged red-light violation. Authorities have not yet released further details on potential charges or additional findings.
