Deadly crash at Dubai Airshow overshadows global summits on Ukraine and climate

A tragic accident at the Dubai Airshow claimed the life of an Indian Air Force pilot when a light combat aircraft crashed during an aerial display. Meanwhile, global leaders gathered at separate events, with discussions on climate, conflict, and cooperation taking centre stage this week.

At the White House, an unexpected meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and New York's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, signalled a rare moment of bipartisan dialogue on urban challenges.

The Dubai Airshow turned fatal when an Indian Air Force aircraft went down in flames. The pilot did not survive the crash, which occurred mid-performance. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause.

In Baku, the D-8 Media Forum opened with a recorded address from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. He stressed the need for stronger regional ties and open dialogue among member states. The event brought together media representatives from eight developing nations.

Halfway across the world, the G20 summit in South Africa proceeded without U.S. participation. The absence followed a dispute over a draft climate declaration, which was finalised without American input. Delegates from other nations continued negotiations without their U.S. counterparts.

Back in Washington, President Trump hosted Zohran Mamdani, New York's mayor-elect, for talks on crime and rising living costs. Despite their political differences, both leaders emphasised a common interest in keeping the city prosperous. Mamdani later called the discussion productive.

In Moscow, President Vladimir Putin addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He warned that Russian military operations would continue if Kyiv and its Western allies refused negotiations. While acknowledging U.S. peace proposals as a possible foundation for a deal, he criticised Ukraine's unwillingness to engage in direct talks.

The week's events highlighted both tragedy and diplomacy. The Dubai Airshow crash left one nation in mourning, while international summits and bilateral meetings underscored deep divisions—and occasional cooperation—on global issues. Discussions on Ukraine's future, climate policy, and urban governance will likely shape the coming months. The D-8 Media Forum in Baku concluded with calls for greater collaboration, setting the stage for further regional initiatives under Aliyev's leadership.
