Deadly head-on crash on Westerburg bypass leaves two dead
A serious traffic accident on the Westerburg bypass (L288) on Friday evening left two people dead, police reported. Two cars collided head-on, and a 17-year-old passenger was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to initial findings from Westerburg police, a 22-year-old woman from the Rennerod municipal association was driving on the L288 from Guckheim toward Gemünden at around 8:28 p.m. Near the Westerburg-Wörth exit, she attempted to overtake and crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle driven by a 65-year-old man from the Bad Marienberg municipal association.
When emergency responders arrived, they found a scene of devastation. One car lay overturned in a roadside ditch, while the other remained on the roadway. The occupants of the overturned vehicle were trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools and air lifting bags. Fire crews also assisted paramedics in freeing the driver of the second car.
The Montabaur integrated control center dispatched a large contingent of responders, including fire departments from Westerburg, Gershasen, and Wengenroth, three ambulances, two emergency doctors, and a rescue helicopter from Mainz.
Despite their efforts, the 22-year-old driver and the 65-year-old man succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The 17-year-old passenger in the young woman's car was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
The L288 remained fully closed until 3 a.m. for accident investigation and recovery operations. A specialized traffic collision team was called in to determine the exact cause of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
