Deadly helicopter crash sparks calls for aviation safety reforms in Kenya
A helicopter crash has claimed the lives of Emurua Dikir MP Johanna Ngeno, pilot George Were, and four others. Leaders from across the political spectrum have called for investigations into the tragedy while paying tribute to those lost.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved air safety measures in the country.
President William Ruto honoured pilot George Were in a speech, describing him as a man of duty, courage, and commitment. People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua also praised Were's experience and dedication to his profession.
Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa urged the government to prioritise air safety. He stressed the need for stricter regulations to prevent future tragedies.
Meanwhile, pro-government leaders used the moment to rally support for President Ruto's re-election campaign next year. Their appeals came alongside calls for unity and stability in the region.
Interior principal secretary Raymond Omollo separately addressed the public, asking young people to maintain peace during the election period. His remarks followed growing tensions ahead of next year's vote.
The crash has left six families in mourning while raising concerns over aviation safety. Investigations into the cause of the accident are expected to begin soon.
Leaders continue to push for reforms as the nation reflects on the lives lost and the need for stronger protective measures.
