DeepL CEO joins Germany’s AI policy group as company launches new AI tool

Jarek Kutylowski, CEO of DeepL, has been appointed to the Strategic Group for Technology and Innovation by the German government, aiding in the development of the country's AI policy. Meanwhile, DeepL has expanded its services with the launch of DeepL Agent, an AI tool for businesses.

Kutylowski, who is supported in his role by Katherina Reiche, the chairperson of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, has expressed concerns about Europe's cautious approach to AI regulation. He fears it could hinder technological progress and economic competitiveness.

DeepL, a German company launched in 2017, has grown to become a 'European Champion' in AI, rivaling larger American companies with its translation service. Its expansion into new services like DeepL Agent is partly driven by customer demand, combining internal innovation with responding to market needs.

Kutylowski acknowledges the potential impact of AI on employment but sees it as a transformation similar to previous technological revolutions. He believes Europe cannot opt out of AI's transformation unilaterally and must navigate the changes within a global context. Despite intensifying competition in its core business, particularly from chatbots like Gemini, DeepL sees its competitive advantage in mission-critical, enterprise-scale translation. Being a European company may also provide DeepL with a competitive edge in data security and geopolitical concerns.

DeepL's expansion into new AI services and its influence on German AI policy reflect the company's growth and impact. Despite challenges in its core business, DeepL continues to innovate and adapt, positioning itself as a key player in the global AI landscape.
