Delaware School Board Removes Member Naveed Baqir for Extended Absence
The Christina School Board in Delaware has removed one of its members, Naveed Baqir, following months of chaotic meetings that garnered state-wide news attention. Baqir, who has been living in Pakistan for nearly two years, was declared to have vacated his seat due to his extended absence from the district and the United States.
Baqir's removal comes after a new law was implemented, mandating Delaware school board members to be physically present in their district at least 75% of the year. The law, along with others aimed at strengthening school board governance, was sponsored by several lawmakers earlier this year.
Baqir, who claimed he was caring for elderly relatives, attending school, and assisting his daughter with her study abroad program, has been residing outside the U.S. since January 2024. His absence drew criticism and led to dysfunctional meetings. In a vote to remove him, two board members voted no, while Baqir abstained.
With Baqir's seat now vacant, the board will appoint a new member to serve until the next elections in May. The removal highlights the importance of the new residency requirements for school board members, ensuring they are present and engaged with the communities they serve.
