Democratic Candidates Raise Millions in NJ-07 Primary Race
The race for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District is heating up, with Democratic party candidates raising significant funds. Megan O'Rourke, a climate scientist, raised over $175,000 in just 24 hours after announcing her campaign. Meanwhile, Rebecca Bennett, another Democratic party hopeful, has amassed over $1.3 million since February.
O'Rourke, who previously worked as a top climate scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has raised a total of $247,168 in her first seven weeks running for the seat. As of the end of September, she had $219,067 on-hand. This impressive start comes as no surprise, given that she raised over $175,000 within 24 hours of announcing her campaign.
Other Democratic party candidates have also shown strong fundraising abilities. Tina Shah, for instance, raised more than $600,000 in the first three months of her campaign. The Democratic party primary is shaping up to be a competitive race, with eight candidates vying for the opportunity to challenge incumbent Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield), who had over $1.5 million in his campaign warchest as of the end of July. The winner of the Democratic party primary is likely in for an expensive general election.
With significant funds raised by multiple Democratic party candidates, the race for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District is set to be a closely contested primary. The winner will face a well-funded incumbent in the general election, ensuring a high-stakes race come November.
