Democrats dominate Union County elections with historic wins
Democrats scored a significant victory in Union County, New Jersey, with Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill winning by a 2-1 margin. The party also made gains at the local level, flipping seats and bolstering their presence in various municipalities.
In Union County, Democrats had a successful night. Mikie Sherrill's win by a 2-1 margin was a clear indication of the party's strength. In Cranford, Democratic incumbents Terrence Curran and Kathleen Miller Prunty retained their seats, defeating Republicans Richard Buonotempoi and Carlos Rodriguez.
In Westfield, Democrats had a clean sweep. Jeremy Berman defeated Michael Domogala by a 59%-41% margin for the mayoral seat. Democrats also flipped three council seats in Summit and held all four council seats in the town. In New Providence, Democrats Alan Lerner and Brian Gardner defeated Republican incumbents Diane Bilcka and Alexander Kogan. Democrats in Garwood held onto two council seats.
The Democrats' success in Union County has bolstered Senate President Nicholas Scutari's political power. The party's gains at the local level, including the flipping of seats in Summit and the clean sweep in Westfield, indicate a strong showing for the Democrats in the region. Meanwhile, in New York, Eric Adams, who ran as an independent but was previously a Democrat, was elected as the city's new mayor.
