In a bid to combat the rising concern of dengue, the Ludhiana District health department has launched an extensive campaign titled 'Har Shukravaar – Dengue Te Vaar' (Every Friday – fight dengue). This week-long drive, led by 521 health teams, targeted high-risk areas such as school campuses, rooftops, overhead water tanks, air coolers, flower pots, and vacant plots.

The inspection drive covered 29,747 houses, 851 schools, and numerous water-holding containers. A total of 51,445 containers were inspected, of which 147 were found having dengue mosquito larvae. These larvae were detected in 23 schools and 61 houses, prompting immediate larvicide spraying and cleanliness advisories to the affected locations. Similar larval detections were reported in 10 police stations during another drive, emphasizing the need for vigilance even in public institutions.

The health department has actively promoted the weekly campaign, urging citizens, schools, and offices to dedicate every Friday to cleaning their premises and eliminating stagnant water sources. Dr. Vivek Kataria, assistant civil surgeon, emphasized the urgent need for greater public awareness and participation in preventing Dengue. He stated, "Finding mosquito larvae in educational institutions and homes is a serious concern. Awareness is emphasized as the most powerful tool for dengue prevention."

Cleaning all water sources at least once a week is essential for dengue prevention. The health teams provided door-to-door awareness about prevention practices during the campaign. Dr. Sheetal Narang, the district epidemiologist in Ludhiana district, emphasized that dengue mosquitoes breed in clean, stagnant water and bite during the daytime. Therefore, breaking the breeding cycle requires consistent removal or treatment of such water pools.

The health department's ongoing campaign in Ludhiana district is not limited to inspections but also includes awareness campaigns. The department stresses that dengue prevention cannot rely solely on government intervention but requires sustained community involvement to cover all possible breeding grounds and maintain cleanliness on a regular basis.

Strict cleanliness advisories were issued to the institutions and residents concerned, urging them to take immediate action to prevent further breeding of dengue mosquitoes. The coordinated larvicide spraying combined with community action and awareness programs form the current integrated approach to dengue control in Ludhiana District.
