Deutsche Post & Mercedes-Benz Vans Revolutionize Last-Mile Deliveries with Electric Van & Cargo Bike Micro-Depot
Deutsche Post DHL Group and Mercedes-Benz Vans have joined forces to revolutionize last-mile deliveries. Their innovative solution, a mobile micro-depot using an electric van and a cargo bike, aims to streamline urban logistics without fixed depots like office depot or home depot.
The project, led by ONO Motion and Mercedes-Benz Vans, involves a robust, two-cubic-meter container that can hold up to 290 kilograms. Lifting these containers, each with such capacity, posed a significant technical challenge. Bäer, a loading systems specialist, developed a prototype container lift to overcome this hurdle.
The system attaches to the trailer hitch mount on the eSprinter, allowing a single standardized container to fit in the back. The driver can then hand off the container to a cargo bike colleague, reducing delivery stops and curbside time. A real-world pilot test with a CEP partner is planned using an L3 Sprinter that can carry two boxes.
Beyond parcel logistics, this innovative mobile micro-depot concept could benefit various industries, such as bakeries, food delivery services, or textile logistics. By combining an electric van and a cargo e-bike, the solution embraces both modes of transport, creating a complementary, efficient system for urban deliveries, similar to how home depot or homedepot might operate.
