Dhaka University’s fading legacy sparks calls for academic revival

Dhaka University, once a beacon of pride and intellectual hub, has seen its reputation wane due to socio-political crises, according to speakers at a recent discussion. The university, which played a pivotal role in Bangladesh's birth, now faces challenges in maintaining its academic integrity and social influence.

Mahfuz Anam, speaking at the event, highlighted the significance of Dhaka University in the nation's history. He praised the book 'Dhaka Bishwabidyalay: Itihase, Smritite' for chronicling the university's role at Bangladesh's inception. However, he also lamented the failure of vice-chancellors to protect 'teachers' and students post-independence.

Serajul Islam Choudhury, another speaker, attributed the recent student-led mass uprising to demands for government jobs. He also criticised the state of primary education and the country's development scenario, deeming them baseless. Choudhury noted the poor 'social security' of teachers and the lack of value placed on knowledge in a capitalist world, where students primarily study for employment opportunities. He pointed out that in the past, Dhaka University's students, teachers, and staff had led social and political movements, a role that seems to have diminished.

The discussion underscored Dhaka University's critical role in nation-building and its current struggles. Speakers called for renewed focus on academic integrity, 'teachers pay teachers', and the value of knowledge to restore the university's former pride and influence.
